Gerri Willever

Gerri Willever is a lifelong educator and a Third Degree Black Belt who combined her love of working with children with the lessons she has learned in teaching self-defense and the martial arts to author Safe From Strangers, Empowering Children from Toddlers to Teenagers.

A respected teacher, Gerri retired in 2002 after 36 years of service with the public school system in Hamilton Township, New Jersey where she specialized in remedial math and reading. She received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a master's in Reading Education from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University).

Gerri's involvement in the martial arts dates back to 1993 when she enrolled in a woman's self defense seminar, Street Survival for Women, offered by the American Karate Institute, also of Hamilton Township. She continued with the school, which emphasizes a style known as The Way of the Sphere, becoming an instructor in 1997 and receiving her Black Belt in 1999. In 2000, Gerri became an owner of the Institute along with partners Norm Dobo and Tammy Chmura. Gerri received her certification as a Rape Prevention Instructor from American Women's Self Defense Association (AWSDA).

Active in her community, Gerri is a member of the NJREA (New Jersey Retired Educators Association), the New Jersey School Women's Association, The Greater Mercer County Chamber of Commerce, the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners, American Women's Self Defense Association, and Soroptimist International.

Gerri has maintained her involvement in education and in the martial arts. By merging these two interests she has developed a new level of teaching and helping others
